Your neighbourhood. Your space.

Akerman Community Hub is opening up Akerman Health Centre in Brixton as a welcoming place to meet, move, learn, rest and get support. Not just when you're unwell, but every day.

We know that most of what keeps us well happens outside the doctor's surgery. Around 80% of our health is shaped by things like income, housing, education and feeling connected to the people around us.

That's why Akerman is changing. Alongside the GP practices and health services already here, we're making room for local people and grassroots groups to run activities that bring the community together and help prevent ill health before it starts.

We offer space to small community organisations, social enterprises and charities who are just getting started. Using the hub as a base for pilot projects helps them build a track record, secure funding and, in time, move on to affordable rent. Good ideas get a home, and the neighbourhood gets the benefit.

More than a health centre

What's happening at Akerman

From health checks to sound baths, here's what's running now or coming soon. Everyone is welcome and you don't need to be registered with a GP here to join in.

Built with the community, step by step

May 2026: The hub launches

More than 350 people joined us on 8 May to celebrate the opening of Akerman Community Hub. Fourteen local organisations took part, from both GP practices to gardening collectives and boxing clubs, with jerk chicken from the drum, a live DJ, free childcare and massages on the day. Visitors shared their ideas on our listening wall, and those ideas are shaping what happens next.

Now to early 2027: The pilot continues.

What started as a three-month pilot has been extended into early 2027. We're testing what works, learning from every group that uses the space and building a model that can keep the hub thriving for years to come

2019: Reimagine Akerman

Residents, community groups, health staff and the building's landlord came together to ask a simple question: what does this neighbourhood really need to thrive? Through tests like free room bookings, a piano in reception and a drumming workshop with a shared meal, people told us they wanted a building that felt welcoming, sociable and theirs.
